Warner Bros. Lands Adaptation Rights To Comic Series 'BLACK'

Warner Bros. has acquired adaptation rights to the comic series BLACK for an upcoming feature film.

Published in 2017, the comic is the brainchild of Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3, centering around a world where only Black people have superpowers.

Osajyefo has been vocal about the comic’s main inspiration coming from a “lack of representation in comics and publishing.”

He noted, “for most of comics’ history, white outcasts have been used as allegories for marginalized groups while claiming to reflect the world outside our window. BLACK strips away this veneer to juxtapose superpowers with race while allowing Black people to see [themselves] authentically in media and inviting wider audiences into parts of our experience.”

According to sources, DC’s Titans producer Bryan Edward Hill has penned the script for the upcoming adaptation.

John Graham, Jeff Robinov and Guy Danella will be handling the production alongside Matteo Pizzolo and Brett Gurewitz. Black Mask Studios is still on the lookout for a director to take on the adaptation.

“We’re excited to bring this story to everyone through film and thankful to Studio 8 for believing in it,” notes Osajyefo.
