Dr. Fadji Maina: At 29 Years Old She Is The First Nigerien To Work For NASA

Dr Fadji Maina

At 29 years old, Dr Maina is the first Nigerian to work for NASA – America’s space agency. Dr Maina is a hydrologist whose work at NASA is crucial to the survival of the human race.

In an interview with the BBC, she explained that she is using mathematical models to be able to understand the water cycle and the evolution of water resources as affected by climate change.

Climate change is now an ever present challenge which might be causing rising sea water levels in one part of the world but also causing excessive drought and the drying of fresh water sources.

As water is that essential to the preservation of life as we know it, Dr Maina’s work at NASA is key to our own survival.

“NASA has all the data about the earth and anything related to the water cycle. I am using NASA’s satellite data to be able to do my work,” she said.

Speaking about her history-making role at NASA, she said “I am happy to have made the entire country proud.”

She urged other young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds who want to pursue careers in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to “believe in yourself and find a supportive environment to be able to nurture your dream.”

Congrats to Dr Fadji Maina!!
