Ghanaian society can be very conservative. No, don’t get me wrong, behind closed doors, Ghanaians can be wild. But in public? No, not a chance. In public, 99% of Ghanaians will not even have a conversation that touches on sexuality. So, what happens when those same people try to buy contraceptives for their extracurricular activities? Here are some of the things that can go wrong when you try to buy condoms, etc, etc, from a Ghanaian pharmacy.

When You’re About To Enter And You See A Lot Of Other People In The Pharmacy

Obviously, if you are about to buy condoms from a pharmacy and there are a lot of people already inside, you need to stop and stand outside. And I’m not even being sarcastic. As a Ghanaian, even if you’re not particularly shy, the judging stares alone should be enough to make you stand outside and wait for everyone else to get out.

Not Being Able To Tell The Pharmacist What You Want

If it’s your first time trying to buy contraceptives, believe me there’ll be a moment when you just freeze. You’ll just stand there and look at the pharmacist, unable to tell him or her what you want. Just awkward.

The Pharmacist Shouting Back Your Order At You

There are some pharmacists that will just be sensitive to the situation. You tell them what you want, and they try to be professional and make everything go quickly. Other pharmacists, though, will just try to mess with you a bit. Some will even say your order back to you loudly just so that anyone else nearby can hear.
