Management of the University of Ghana has increased tuition fees for the 2020/2021 academic year.

Checks by Univers News indicate that school fees for the 2020/2021 academic year have seen a marginal increment of at least 12.3 per cent from the 2019/2020 fee schedule.

For some schools, the fees have been increased as much as 12.56 percent with the least being 12.27 percent.

For students in the sciences, they would observe a 12.50 percent increment. This shows an increase of 211 Ghana Cedis bringing the new fees to 1899 Ghana Cedis from the previous 1688 Ghana Cedis for continuing students only.

At the school of Agriculture, for continuing students the fees moved from GHC 1751.00 in 2019 to GHC 1971.00. This showed an increment of 12.56 per cent was observed from the previous fees.

Parliamentary approval

According to the fees and charges act 983, any proposal to increase fees will first have to be approved by parliament. As it stands, it is unclear if the observed increment has been given the go-ahead by parliament.

Prior to this, tuition fees were increased for the 2019/2020 academic year by 5 percent. This was later assented to by parliament.

UG becomes one of the few schools to have increased fees for the next academic year. Ghana Institute of Journalism, earlier this month increased fees by 5 per cent for the 20/21 academic year.
