At the just ended VGMA 2020, Okyeame Kwame won the Record of The Year award for his song, Bolgatanga Girl which addresses the issue of young girls in the North being tricked into becoming ‘Kayaye’ in Accra.
The Record of The Year category is a special one that’s awarded by the VGMA Academy and Board as the most outstanding original song that was released during the year under review. According to the category definitions, songs nominated in this category are songs that may not have enjoyed commercial success but have quality artistic and production value.
For such a unique category, Okyeame Kwame is definitely well deserving of the award. He’s quite known for making original music grounded in the Ghanaian culture and has had a long and fruitful journey in Ghana’s music industry.
Born as Kwame Nsiah Apau in Kumasi, Okyeame Kwame got interested in music at an early age despite his parents’ hopes of him becoming a physician in future. Fortunately, he became a different type of doctor…the Rap Docta as he’s often called himself in his music journey.
He first schooled at the Anglican Senior High School in Kumasi before going on to study music at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, graduating as a linguist. Later, after launching a very successful music career, Okyeame Kwame went on to study for a Masters degree in Marketing Strategy at the University of Ghana Business School.
Okyeame Kwame made his major debut into the music scene as a member of the hiplife duo, Akyeame. He and his group member, Okyeame Kofi released a few hit singles earning them several nominations in the 1999 VGMA and winning the Hiplife Song of the Year for their popular song, Masan Aba before parting ways in 2004.
Making music as a solo artiste under his own record label, One Mic Entertainment, Okyeame Kwame soared in the industry, dropping hit songs with impressive features from major highlife and hiplife names like Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi and more.
As a solo artiste, Okyeame Kwame released Bohye Ba, in 2004 and Manwesem in 2008 which had the hit single, Woso that earned him several nominations in the Channel O Music Video Awards, Africa Music Awards (UK) and of course, the 2009 VGMA where he went won in all 5 categories he was nominated in, including the Artiste of The Year Award.
The Versatile Show album was released in 2012 and, in that same year, he received 9 nominations in the VGMAs most of which were for his hit single Faithful featuring Yaa Yaa. Out of the 9 nominations, he took home the awards for Songwriter of The Year and Best Collaboration of The Year.
Made In Ghana, released in 2019 will be his most recent album. The album is very unique with an authentic sound and each song represents a region, mimicking the rhythms, style and sounds of that particular region which is why it’s no shock that he earned the nominations for Album Of The Year and Record of The Year at the 2020 VGMA.
In between releasing albums, Okyeame Kwame has earned a name for himself in the industry as a highly respectable and versatile artiste with a hiplife legendary tag to his name. He’s won a Ghana Movie Award for Best Cameo for his role in the movie, Ties That Bind and his unique fashion sense has won him the 2017 Glitz Style Award for Most Stylish Artiste of The Year.
His love for the Ghanaian culture and desire to give back to the community has earned him several awards and ambassadorial deals. In 2016, Okyeame Kwame was presented with a Key to the City of Cincinnati to solemnise his status as International Cultural Ambassador to the city. The Ministry of Trade and Industry also appointed the artiste as Ambassador the for the Ministry’s ‘Made in Ghana’ campaign.
His Okyeame Kwame Foundation has also earned him several honorary awards like the 2017 United States Presidential Volunteer Service Award’s Kingdom Humanitarian Award of The Year, the United States Presidential Volunteer Service Award for the Highest Civilian Honour and more.
He’s dropped numerous hit singles, featured on even more and has performed on major stages with his band including a performance at the Annie O Music series for big-name international music media houses like the Rolling Stone among others.
Okyeame Kwame is currently married to his wife of 11 years, Annica Nsiah-Apau who also doubles as his Business and Brand Development Manager. They have two kids, Sir and Sante who made their debut into the music scene at ages 7 and 5 in 2017.
