It’s official! Tyler Perry, who just so happens to be one of the hardest working men in Hollywood, has been confirmed to be a billionaire by Forbes.
The publication took a deep dive into the filmmaker’s career for its latest cover story. Fittingly, the story is titled “From Poor As Hell To Billionaire: How Tyler Perry Changed Show Business Forever.” By looking at his accomplishments and assets, Forbes reported that the star has earned himself more than $1.4 billion since 2005.
The outlet also made mention of the fortune that he’s gotten not just from his movies — such as fan-favorite Madea ones and TV shows, but it also spoke about the capital Perry has gained from the ownership of homes in multiple cities across the country, planes, and not to mention his mega-production studio in Georgia, which hosted the record-breaking Verzuz battle between Brandy and Monica.
“The 51-year-old entertainer owns the entirety of his creative output, including more than 1,200 episodes of television, 22 feature films and at least two dozen stage plays, as well as a 330-acre studio lot at the edge of Atlanta’s southern limits,” the outlet claims. “He used that control to leverage a deal with ViacomCBS that pays him $150 million a year for new content and gives him an equity stake in BET+, the streaming service it debuted last September.”
As many fans of Perry may already know, he grew up having very little material possessions. The star truly was, as his cover story reads, poor. As Perry grew into adulthood, he even became homeless and lived in his car for quite some time before he turned into the entertainment power player and billionaire! that he is today.
“I love when people say you come from ‘humble beginnings,’ ” Perry told Forbes. “[It] means you were poor as hell.” The businessman and philanthropist added, “Ownership changes everything.”
