Medikal won the award for the Best Hiplife Song for the Year for his song, Omo Ada at the just ended 2020 VGMA. Here’s a look at his music journey and his personal life.
Born, Samuel Adu Frimpong on born 4 April 1993, Medikal comes from Sowutuom and is an old student of Odorgonno Senior High School. He dropped out of Senior High but in an interview at Showbiz, he mentioned he later went to IPMC to learn Computer Engineering.

Medikal got his rap name because of his fascination in rapping about doctors, medical practitioners and hospitals. The Ghanaian hiplife/hip-hop artiste first started making music as early as 2008 but had a hard time funding it, however, his hard work and talent gained him a lot of fans and in 2016, he received his first award, the MTN 4Syte Music Video Award for Best Discovery Video for his hip-hop song, Anthem.
He re-dropped his first-ever mixtape mostly produced by Unkle Beatz in 2016. The mixtape titled Medikation was originally released in 2013. 2017 was a good year for the young rapper. He had just become one of the hottest young artistes and had released several songs with hot features from the likes of Sarkodie, Stonebwoy and more including his debut album, Disturbation which had several hit songs that earned him nominations at the VGMA.
He was nominated in 7 categories out of which he won none and was trolled heavily on social media. the nominations included: Afro Pop Song of the year for his song Too Risky, Best Collaboration of The Year and Hip Hop Song Of The Year for his remix to Confirm which featured Sarkodie, Hip-life/hip Pop Artist Of The Year, Best New Act, Best Rapper of the year and the highly acclaimed Artist of The Year.
That same year, he was nominated for the EMY Discovery Of The Year as well as the AFRIMMA Best Newcomer category.
2018 saw the rise of a different version of Medikal. He expanded his music style and dropped his first fun viral song, Adwee Ba. This will be followed by other songs in that same style in 2019, Omo Ada and Kayayoo.
In 2018, Medikal received no nominations at the VGMA and admitted in several interviews that he was not aware whether or not his team had submitted his songs for nomination. However, he finally won the Best Rapper of the Year and the HipHop Artiste of the year awards at the 2019 VGMA and dropped his The Plug EP that same year.
Features wise, Medikal had a very busy 2019 with features on several hit songs including Kelvynboy’s Loko, Quamina MP’s Amanfuor Girls, Sista Afia’s Weather among others.
The rapper currently holds the award for the Best Hiplife song for his song, Omo Ada and released an EP, The Island EP in July, ahead of his The Truth album which currently has no confirmed release date.
