Last Saturday, a young talented musician was crowned the best musician in Ghana.

As a music loving nation, that honor is a rare privilege very few will be able to have.

However, just as it happens after every award season, especially the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), there are people who are not satisfied with who won what and Kuami Eugene’s Artiste of the Year win seemed controversial to certain groups of people.

The category is made up of three voting blocks who make up the 100%. The VGMA Board gets 30% of the votes, the VGMA Academy gets 30% and the General Public gets 40%.

This year’s votes, as it has been for several years now, was audited by the accounting firm KPMG and days after the plaques were handed out they have released the actual voting results.

For this category, there were five musicians competing – Kuami Eugene, Kofi Kinaata, Sarkodie, Diana Hamilton and Medikal.

Medikal had the least votes by securing just 2% of the votes, Kofi Kinaata was in fourth place with 14% of the votes.

Though some social media users were hoping Sarkodie would win which might have suggested that he was a close second, he was actually in third place with 22% of the votes, beaten by the Gospel musician Diana Hamilton who had 26% of the votes.

Kuami Eugene secured 36% of the votes to win the best award of his career.

Congrats again to the Kuulpeeps.com Emergers 2017 lister, Kuami Eugene!
