Kuami Eugene won the artiste of the year award at the just ended VGMA 2020 awards. Naturally, people have their reservations about Kuami Eugene’s award. Did he deserve it? Did he not?
The artiste of the year is determined by the VGMA Board and the public. The ‘rules’ are: The Artiste of the year must have a hit single or album during the year under review and must have high audience appeal and popularity and of course must be one of the artistes with the highest number of nominations.
Let’s take a look at Kuami Eugene’s 2019 music year.
We do not have all the data of course because we cannot tell what his streams were like but, we do know he was hard at work with his music.
Just look at some of his 2019 features:
Kuami Eugene was on a song with almost all the huge names in the music industry. He was on Sarkodie’s Black Love album (Honey). He was on the hit Baby song by DJ Vyrusky featuring Shatta Wale. He was on Fancy Gadam’s Only You and Wendy Shay also featured him on Psalm 35 with Sark. Stonebwoy also featured him on Take Me Away.
He even made music with the ‘boujee’ La Meme Gang and was featured on their song, This Year. Ground Up also released their debut project and Kuami Eugene was right there on a song, Elevate with Kwesi Arthur.
Fameye’s debut hit single, Nothing I Get got a remix with Kuami Eugene on it and the very popular song, Bless Me by Nigeria’s GoodGirl LA had Kuami Eugene on the remix.
The whole time, he had only two singles out: Obiaato and Ohemaa.
Obiaato and Ohemaa were a huge success. From Ghud Music’s data, those two songs received endless radio AirPlay which we can all attest to, with the two songs getting played on 92 radio stations!
This doesn’t even include air play from his featured songs.
He’s consistently been in YouTube’s Top 10 artistes and Obiaato has been in the Top 10 most played songs on YouTube in Ghana for the past 12 months.
Obiaato currently has 2.3M views and Ohemaa, 4.8M views.
In terms of voting, it is not hard to believe Kuami Eugene was heavily voted for by Ghanaians. Remember his song is played on the radio in all parts of Ghana and he’s touched base with fans in all regions (Remember his concert in Kumasi?). Be like we’ve all forgotten he even sold out and headlined a concert in Sierra Leone as well.
Kuami Eugene’s songs are the kind of songs everyone knows word for word, both young and old. The masses.
So guess who voted??
After his award, he posted this and honestly, it’s the perfect response to show how hard he’s been working to achieve the Artiste of The Year Award ever since he broke into the industry.
The whole point of this article is to let everyone with doubts know that, it is not farfetched that Kuami Eugene won the Artiste of The Year Award. Maybe, fans of the other artistes expected to win became complacent and didn’t vote so hard but…Kuami Eugene deserves the award as much as the others and was a strong contender.
