Reigning NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo has been named the 2019/20 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
Antetokounmpo received 432 total points in the voting. LA Lakers’ Anthony Davis came second with 200 points and Utah Jazz’s Rudy Gobert came third with 187 points.
Antetokounmpo, before the NBA was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, averaged 2.0 combined steals and blocks across 30.9 minutes per game.
He led the Milwaukee Bucks to a league-best 102.9 defensive rating. He also led the NBA in defensive rating (97.1), defensive win shares (5.0) and defensive box plus/minus (4.1).
Antetokounmpo becomes the fifth player to win both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in his career, joining Kevin Garnett, Hakeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan and David Robinson.
He also is the first Bucks player to win the award since Sidney Moncrief won it in the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons.
