Five Of The Most Shocking Football Transfer Hijacks

Mohamed Salah unveiled as a Chelsea player in 2014

When David Silva announced that he will be leaving Manchester City after 10 years, it was reported that Serie A side Lazio had approached the midfielder to sign him.

Since that news broke, we were all expecting Silva to be a Lazio player after he ends the 2019/20 season with City.

Lazio were reported to have offered Silva a three-year contract, but Spanish club Real Sociedad hijacked the move to get the midfielder to play for them next season.

Reports indicate that Silva was expected to fly to Rome for a medical, but he ignored phone calls from the Lazio before signing a two-year contract with Real Sociedad instead.

With this latest transfer hijack happening, we have decided to put together five remarkable transfer hijacks in football.

Check them out:

Malcom to AS Roma, hijacked by Barcelona (2018)

Malcom’s transfer from Bordeaux to Barcelona

Malcom was ready to join AS Roma in 2018 after the Italian side confirmed that an agreement had been reached with Bordeaux.

Roma fans were waiting for his arrival at the airport, but they were left disappointed when the winger failed to turn up.

Barcelona had intervened in the eleventh hour and made the Ligue 1 side a bigger offer, prompting them to pull out of their deal with Roma.

Roma sporting director Monchi threatened legal action against Bordeaux, while Malcom’s agent said the U-turn was “revenge” after the Italian club used a different agent to sign one of his other clients, goalkeeper Daniel Fuzato.

John Obi Mikel to Manchester, hijacked by Chelsea (2006)

Mikel was presented as a Manchester United player in a press conference back in 2005, only for Chelsea to claim that they already had an agreement with the player’s agent.

United asked the Premier League to launch an investigation into the matter and a year-long legal battle ensued between the English giants.

The Red Devils eventually agreed to terminate their agreement and the Blues got their man, though they had to pay their rivals £12million in compensation.

Willian to Tottenham, hijacked by Chelsea (2013)

Tottenham thought that they had won the race to sign Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013 and the winger even completed his medical.

But Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich used his contacts in Russia to hijack the deal while Willian was still at Tottenham’s training ground.

Mohamed Salah to Liverpool, hijacked by Chelsea (2014)

Mohamed Salah unveiled as a Chelsea player

Mohamed Salah looked all set to join Liverpool, until his agent Sascha Empacher claimed that the Reds’ indecisiveness cost them the transfer.

Liverpool could not agree a fee after prolonged talks with the representatives of Salah, and he eventually signed for Chelsea after the Blues contacted FC Basel.

But it looks like Salah was destined to attain glory with Liverpool as he later joined the Reds in 2017 after his stint at Chelsea was not successful.

Robinho to Chelsea, hijacked by Manchester City (2008)

Chelsea started selling replica shirts with Robinho’s name on them before the deal was done, but they were left with egg on their faces.

Manchester City wanted to make a marquee signing after Sheikh Mansour’s takeover in 2008 and managed to sign the attacker for £32.5million.

The move came out of nowhere; it was so shocking that even Robinho didn’t seem to know who he had signed for.
