A lot of people are into DIYs because, well, they’re affordable. With items in your kitchen you can have the “perfect” skin but this way of thinking and doing your skincare can be damaging.
I already have an article about why you should avoid using a face scrub and you can read about it here.
Lemon juice contains some properties that are seemingly great for your skin, including alpha hydroxy acid which acts like an exfoliant. It also contains citric acid and Vitamin C which can lighten your underarm but it is also an acid that can burn the skin.
If you have a sensitive skin, it can cause a severe irritation.
DIY lemon juice skincare has also been linked to chemical leukoderma, where patches of skin depigment – in other words, you end up with uneven lightened patches on your skin. (Source: labmuffin.com)
If you still want to use lemon on your face, start with a spot treatment. Apply a little on a part of your body (which isn’t your face). Do this once or twice daily and if there isn’t any reaction, you can go ahead and use it on your face.
Don’t forget to use sunscreen after doing your DIY treatment.
