6 African Footballers Who Have Won The Europa League

The UEFA Europa League is an annual football club competition organised by UEFA since 1971 for eligible European football clubs.

Qualification for the competition is based on the performance of clubs in their respective leagues and cup competitions.

The current holders of the title is Premier League side Chelsea, who have won it twice.

The final stages of 2019/20 edition is currently being played in Germany due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Manchester United were eliminated on Sunday, August 16, 2020, by Sevilla and Inter Milan are set to take on Shakhtar Donetsk in the second quarter-final game.

Some African players have been part of clubs that lifted the trophy.

Below is a list of six Africans who won the UEFA Europa League with their respective clubs. The list consists of four Nigerians, one Malian and one Ghanaian.

Nwankwo Kanu

Nwankwo Kanu won the Europa League with Inter Milan in 1998.

He was an unused substitute as Inter thumped Serie A rivals Lazio 3-0.

Taribo West

Toribo West was also part of Inter Milan’s 1998 Europa League-winning team which included compatriot Nwankwo Kanu.

West featured for Inter but got sent off after he shown a red card in the 82nd minute.

Inter, however, went on to beat Lazio 3-0 in Paris.

Freddie Kanoute

Freddie Kanoute enjoyed success with Sevilla in the Europa League competition.

He won the Europa League on two occasions, enjoying back-to-back triumphs in 2006 and 2007.

John Obi Mikel

Mikel Obi won the Europa League with Chelsea in 2013. He was an unused substitute as the Blues defeated Benfica 2-1 in Amsterdam.

Mikel, the year before, played for Chelsea in the 2012 final of the UEFA Champions League in Munich, which they won after defeating Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Victor Moses

Victor Moses was also a member of Chelsea’s Europa League-winning team in 2013, along with compatriot Mikel Obi.

He was also an unused substitute.

Thomas Partey

Thomas Partey won the Europa League in 2018 with Atletico Madrid.

He is the first Ghanaian to win the competition.

He came on as a substitute in 88th minute to help Atletico secure a 3-0 victory over Marseille in Lyon.
