Beirut Explosion: Essien, Salah & Other African Footballers Extend Condolences

Beirut, the capital of Lebanon was hit by a massive explosion on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, which resulted in the death of dozens and injured many.

The explosion also damaged cars, roads and buildings in the city.

Reports indicate that the explosion could be felt hundreds of kilometres away in Cyprus.

It is also reported that the explosion was caused by tonnes of ammonium nitrate that were stored in a warehouse for six years.

However, an official report on the cause of the explosion has not been released yet.

Many people around the world have expressed their support for the people of Lebanon through social media.

“Pray for Lebanon” and some hashtags in relation to the incident are trending on social media, as people keep sharing their reactions.

African footballers including Chelsea legend Michael Essien, Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah, Dutch-born Ghanaian footballer Memphis Depay and Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez, have also reacted to the incident.
