Speaking to Ginius in an email interview, she took us through how she got into music being inspired by Paapa Yankson and how her curiosity led her to making music.
“Curiosity – I was always mesmerized by these sounds that moved people to do a lot of things. Music is a universal language no matter where you are in the world. So I went ahead and over the years taught myself it, from playing in praises and worship teams at church to school orchestra to now on a digital platform. I pull a lot of inspiration from old school and new school artists globally – honorary mentions to H.E.R. and Paapa Yankson.” Ginius said.
Learning a lot from the ongoing pandemic, Ginius drew inspiration to create an Anthem for everyone,
“I felt taken aback from staying indoors for so long. If there’s one thing this pandemic has taught us it is “Togetherness” we need to work together to overcome our new conditions and I wanted to go out there and do this with my people. We just needed an anthem to keep us going whiles working and that is Happy to be Outside EP.”
The thought of going outside inspired this project, “Missing my friends and people on the outside really. I was slowly getting tired of the FaceTime and Zoom calls.“
Amapiano is the current wave originating from South Africa at style of House music, Ginius takes through the creative process behind “Happy To Be Outside“, and the Challenges she faced along the way.
“After discovering the new Amapiano sound and watching Sarafina again, I knew I wanted to be on this sound. I went straight into production and then later wrote on it. Shoutout DJ Kwamzy for also pushing me to do it – he really put me on the sound.”
“I fell in love working with this genre there’s something empowering about South Africa music. After you listen to it you genuinely feel like u can conquer anything that comes your way especially their choirs. I would’ve loved to put a SA veteran on this but I couldn’t clear it in time – if we are lucky I might release the remix of one of the songs on soundcloud.” Ginius added.
During the making of this project, Ginius was still a student and learning how to balance the two was her secret weapon, “Well, school was slowly finishing so I laid out a plan to finish courseworks in order to come back and fully focus on this. I’m passionate about both so I wasn’t going to let one thing lack haha.”
Coming from Ghana Ginius is looking forward to putting more music especially working with more Ghanaian producers, which Ghanaian producers and musicians she wants to work with ,here’s what she had to say,
“Old school: Appietus & Gospel producers I want to tell George Fiest we are still waiting on that Ohemaa Mercy and Christina Love collab or Daughter of glorious Jesus and Suzzy and Matt. I don’t even have to play anything I just want to be there haha.”
Ghanaians have a huge impact in the music scene in UK, “We definitely a huge of black music in the UK from Lethal Bizzle to Stormzy to Fuse OGD to Kojey Radical to NSG all winning in their own ways and I’m proud to share a heritage with them.”
