Today is a holiday and for those who don’t know, it’s for the Eid-ul-Adha celebration

Eid-ul-Adha is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year and commemorates Ibrahim‘s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismael as an act of obedience to God’s command.

Now inasmuch as we all pretend we know why the holiday is celebrated, this is how the holiday was accepted in Ghana. The different types of people and the reason they think today is a holiday:

There are hundreds of people who are currently enjoying the holiday not because they know why it’s a holiday but because they are just happy they’ve got a free day to not go to school or work.

“Meat please?”

Some people know it’s a holiday for Muslims but all they really want is the meat that will be shared. That’s actually the only thing they know: It’s a holiday and there will be meat from Muslim friends.

Sometimes it’s just the excuse to party. You’d see someone jamming and ask why and they’d say it’s because of the holiday. Why are they celebrating? They do not know.

And finally there are those who accept that it’s a holiday just because “the president said it”. They don’t know why, they don’t know how but as long as it’s a holiday announced by the government then by all means it’s the President’s holiday.
