The hashtag #JusticeForIzu has been trending on social media for about 12 hours now, as people are engaging in discussions about rape and how suspects are judged without been given the chance to share their side of the story.
According to reports on social media, Izu, a young Nigerian man committed suicide after he was falsely accused of rape by a lady.
The reports indicate that Izu was listed among sexual offenders and because he could not handle all the attacks that were coming at him, he committed suicide.
The issue has generated varied opinions on social media from Nigerians and Ghanaians.
We have, however, put together some interesting reactions from Ghanaians that address the issue of rape and how it is handled.
Feminists have been criticised for how they handle issues related to rape and women. The critics indicated that being a feminist doesn’t mean you have to be against what men do.
They, however, called on feminists to carry out thorough investigations on rape cases before attacking the suspects.
There are also calls to put an end to false rape accusations.
Others called for the arrest of the lady who accused Izu falsely. They also called for the arrest of every woman who also falsely accuse men of rape.
Others also questioned how social media is used now. They indicated that social media users just hop on every issue and attack the people involved without considering how they would feel.
Some were also surprised at the silence of some Ghanaian feminists on the issue. They are expecting them to come out and speak on the issue like they have done in the past.
The issue also sparked some “Fear Women” posts.
