The Ballon d’Or which is regarded as the most prestigious individual award for footballers will not be awarded this year due to the interruption of football in 2020 caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

France Football, the organisers of the Ballon d’Or, announced this on Monday, July 20, 2020.

According to them, the “lack of sufficient fair conditions” is the reason why the prize will not be awarded for this calendar year.

This will be the first time since 1956 that the Ballon d’Or will not be awarded to any footballer.

The Ballon d’Or has been dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in recent times. However, Messi is the current holder of the award and he will continue to keep it for another 12 months due to the cancellation of the award.

Messi has won this for a record six-times, while rival Cristiano Ronaldo has won it five-times.

However, many football pundits were hoping that the dominance of Messi and Ronaldo will end with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski winning the Ballon d’Or after he performed so well this season.

Lewandowski scored 51 goals in 43 games for Bayern Munich in the 2019/20 season, and every football fan felt this was his year to win the award after losing it to Messi and Ronaldo for many years.

The cancellation of the award, however, means that Lewandowski can’t win the Ballon d’Or and this has made a lot of football fans very unhappy.

Even though the Ballon d’Or has been cancelled and Lewandowski can’t win it, people have a different narrative that they will tell their descendants.
