Children who are born to well known parents tend to lose their own identity.
Who they are takes second seat to whose child they are.
Zindzi Mandela had two strong parents – Nelson Mandela and Winni Madikizela-Mandela.
In 1985, Zindzi took on a key role in the fight against apartheid. She read a letter from her father in front of the world’s press. In the letter, her father was rejecting an offer to be released from prison if he denounced violence perpetrated by his movement, the Africa National Congress, against apartheid, the brutal system of racial discrimination enforced in South Africa at that time.
However, beyond having famous parents she was also her own person.
In the 59 years she has been on earth, Zindzi would also survive apartheid South Africa and later become its Ambassador to Denmark. A post she had held since 2015.
Just last year, she also publicly advocated for the return of white-owned land to South Africa’s dispossessed Black majority.
She was a revered and respected activist in her own right.
She is survived by her husband and four children Zoleka Mandela, Zondwa Mandela, Bambatha Mandela and Zwelabo Mandela-Hlongwane.
