John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday, July 6, 2020, picked former Minister for Education, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2020 general elections.
The nomination of Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was unanimously approved by the National Executive Committee of the party.
After she was officially announced as the running mate of John Mahama, some Ghanaians took to social media to claim that she was a “bad choice” for the NDC because of the “bad decisions” she made during her time as Minister for Education.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) also held a press conference where they questioned the integrity and commitment of Prof Opoku-Agyemang during her tenure as Minister for Education.
They cited, among other things, the cancellation of the teacher trainee allowance, freeze on education sector employment as some of the decisions that ultimately make her unfit for the new role.
They also stated that she poses a serious danger to the country’s development because she has nothing relevant to offer Ghanaians.
However, Ghanaians who are happy about the selection of Prof Opoku-Agyeman are using the hashtag #ImWithHer to amplify her achievements which they claim outweighs the negatives that some Ghanaians are propagating.
The hashtag, however, is currently trending number one on Ghana’s Twitter trends.
Gender advocates are also excited about Prof Opoku-Agyeman’s selection as they believe it will go a long way to empower more women in the country.
