In February 2020, former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah and sports betting company, Betway, joined forces to organise a project to help and empower former Ghanaian footballers to live more productive lives when they retire from the sport.

The project dubbed “The Betway 12th Man” has finally come to an end with a graduation ceremony in Accra on Saturday, July 4, 2020.

Former Ghanaian footballers who participated in the project are Ali Jahra, Amankwah Mireku, Awudu Issaka, Adabass Hamdia, Adjoa Bayor, Lydia Ankrah, Dan Quaye, Isaac Amoako, Patrick Villars and Peter Ofori Quaye.

They received training in sport management, club administration, entrepreneurship, project management and other areas.

Stephen Appiah, who is also a Betway Brand Ambassador, hopes the participants will use the new skills that they have acquired to help their communities.

“Thanks to Betway for this great initiative, it’s been an exciting journey of learning and upliftment for my colleagues and former heroes. I sat through all the sessions and have learnt a lot myself. I am happy to see some of the legends put into practise their newly found skills. Hopefully, our legends will go back and implement what they have learnt from the various training leading to the growth of our local football.”
