Today, the Presidential candidate for the NDC, John Dramani Mahama unveiled who will be his running mate for this year’s presidential election.

The former President is asking Ghanaians to trust him again to run this country. Once again, he has gone for a well-educated technocrat from the Central Region, Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.

Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang was the Minister for Education of Ghana. She was appointed in 2013 by then-President John Mahama after the 2012 Ghanaian general election.

At the time of her appointment, she was the Vice-Chancellor of University of Cape Coast.

When she was appointed to the office of the Vice-Chancellor in 2008, she was the first female Vice-Chancellor of a state-owned university in the country.

She is an academician and she has served in various academic positions, including Head of the Department of English, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Warden of Adehye Hall, Valco Trust Fund Post-Graduate Hostel, and Dean of School of Graduate Studies and Research.

She has served as Academic Director of the School for International Training in the History and Cultures of the African Diaspora.

In March, 2007, she was one of five scholars selected to deliver presentations during the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

In October 2009, she was elected Ghana’s representative to the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Now, she has become the first woman to be second in command of a major political party in the country.

If former President John Mahama wins the election, Prof Agyeman would be a heart beat away from becoming President herself in the next four years.
