It is exactly ten years ago since a penalty miss by Asamoah Gyan cost Ghana the opportunity to become the first African country to qualify for a semi-final of a senior World Cup competition.
Ghana was awarded a penalty in the dying minutes of extra time after Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez prevented a header by Dominic Adiyiah from entering the net.
Even though Ghana was denied a winning goal by Luiz Suarez, the penalty came as a very good opportunity to send Ghana to the semi-finals.
The whole of Ghana and even Africa were sitting on tenterhooks and waiting for Asamoah Gyan to brilliantly slot in the ball from the penalty spot, but all hopes were crushed as Gyan’s kick hit and bounced off the crossbar.
The Black Stars were not able to make amends in the penalty shootout as Ghana lost 4-2 to Uruguay.
Ghana Facts & History posted a video of Asamoah Gyan’s penalty miss on social media today to mark ten years since the incident happened.
However, judging by the reactions, Ghanaians are still hurt by the incident.
A lot of them gave accounts of how they reacted after Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty.
Others have still not forgiven Luis Suarez for his action which denied Ghana a victory.
