23-Year-Old Nigerian Writer Innocent Chizaram Ilo Wins Commonwealth Prize

This year’s Commonwealth Short Story Prize is shaping up to be a real competition.

It has been announced that Lagos-based author, 23-year-old Innocent Chizaram Ilo is the African regional winner of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2020.

His winning story, “When a Woman Renounces Motherhood”, is a painful story recounted by one Nwakego about her mother’s plight and what she endures at the hands of her husband and the community at large.

He often writes about class, gender, and sexuality and he is the youngest to have won the Africa region Commonwealth Prize.
