Black Stars striker, Asamoah Gyan has marked 14 years since he became the first Ghanaian player to score for the senior national team at a World Cup competition.
Asamoah Gyan scored Ghana’s first World Cup goal against the Czech Republic on June 17, 2020. The goal he scored is also Ghana’s fastest goal in World Cup history.
The 2006 World Cup in Germany was Ghana’s first World Cup appearance and the country’s first win was against the Czech Republic after losing to Italy in the opening game.
Beating the Czech Republic was a great feat for Ghana because the European country, at the time, was ranked second in the FIFA world rankings.
The Black Stars went on to win 2-0, with Sulley Muntari scoring the second goal for Ghana.
Asamoah Gyan is now the country’s all-time top goalscorer with 51 goals.
