Renowned Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Adichie has revealed that she once “developed a mild crush” for former Black Stars midfielder, Michael Essien when Ghana defeated the United States at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

She disclosed this in an introduction she wrote for a book titled Africa, The Future Of Football, written by Pall Stefansson.

Chimamanda Adichie, in a video she posted on Facebook, read the introduction which she titled Football Nationalism.

According to her, she became Ghanaian on the day Ghana played the USA at the 2006 World Cup, largely because her country was not at the tournament.

She watched the game with her friend and they were excited when Ghana won.

“I watched the game with my best friend, Uju, often shouting and then hugging each other when Ghana finally beat the United States.”

Speaking on why she developed a mild crush on Michael Essien, Chimamanda stated that she was fascinated by his looks and his dexterity as a footballer.

“A small consequence of that game was me developing a mild crush on the Ghanaian player, Michael Essien, as much for his looks as for his dexterity.”
