The Major League Soccer (MLS) has confirmed that the league will resume again from 8 July, with all 26 teams set to take part in an all-new tournament which will be held at Disney World.
As has been the case around the world, the MLS was halted in March as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. But a new plan has now been drawn up, prioritising the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
The league confirmed that the ‘MLS Is Back’ tournament will be held from next month [July 8] at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida with 56 matches, regular-season points and a spot in 2021 CONCACAF Champions League up for grabs.
“The opportunity to have all 26 clubs in a controlled environment enables us to help protect the health of our players, coaches and staff as we return to play,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber explained.
The group stages of the tournament will begin on 8 July, with ten teams eliminated for a knockout phase to begin a fortnight later – culminating in a final on 11 August.
The regular season is expected to continue after the completion of the tournament.
