The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah has directed the Department of Urban Roads to begin repair works on the Agbogbloshie road following some structural defects after Tuesday’s dawn heavy downpour.
The MCE gave the directive on Tuesday when he visited some parts of the city to ascertain the level of damage caused by the rains stating that the removal of the asphalt on the bridge poses a potential danger to road users hence the decision for the closure.
He explained that the Assembly had notified the Department of Urban Roads to assess the extent of damage as well as the integrity of the bridge and advise accordingly.
“We don’t want to take chances; we don’t know whether the actual problem is from the asphalt or the physical structure of the bridge. It is for this reason why we have invited the officers from Urban Roads to come and assess the impact before any decision is taken, ” he said.
He pointed out that the 2.5km road was recently reconstructed by Jus Mo construction, to ease traffic congestion in the area and create an exit point to link motorists to the Graphic Road adding that measures would be put in place to repair the defects so as to promote economic growth in the areas.
The Mayor also appealed to the police to assist the assembly to manage traffic along the stretch of the road and ordered that no truck should be allowed to park or operate on the road.
