Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is under fire for a caricature he posted on Twitter today [June 2, 2020].
The caricature he posted showed the Electoral Commissioner Jean Mensah “choking a Ghanaian” with the help of President Akufo-Addo, which is similar to the bizarre circumstances through which George Floyd died.
According to Sammy Gyamfi, the caricature doesn’t seek to mock the death of George Floyd or “seek to exploit the same for political capital in any way.”
“Floyd was choked to death while screaming for breath. In GH today, the Jean Mensah-led EC is seeking to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters through a xenophobic voter register. The potential victims of this grave injustice, are screaming for breath. They are screaming for their inalienable right to vote,” he said.
He went on to state that he sees nothing wrong with the caricature he posted.
“Nothing wrong with sharing a cartoon which draws a parallel between the painful xenophobic murder of George Floyd, and the evil attempt by the GH EC to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters through a xenophobic voter register. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. This is a serious matter, not a joke.”
Well, Ghanaians on Twitter are not accepting his explanation as they are condemning him for being insensitive.
Other Twitter users advised him to delete the image and apologise for his actions.
