One of the things that has gained the attention of Ghanaians especially during this coronavirus pandemic is Ghanaian fabric, their names and their meaning.
It has been championed by a Twitter handle called @ChristDeKing.
It gained popularity when the handle would interpret the African print President Akufo Addo wore to address the nation about coronavirus. In almost all the cases – the President’s choice of African print, spoke to the spirit of the address.
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has set questions asking students to provide academic papers about the President’s choice of African prints.
Second year students in the Department of Industrial Art of the College of Art and & Built Environment of the university have been asked to explore this issue.
The names of African prints and their meanings is a cultural practice in the country. This is highly considered when families are choosing African prints for funerals and other commemorative celebrations.
It is now beginning to make an impact in academia.
