Dr Phyllis Ohene-Agyei: The Exceptional Gey Hey Old Girl Helping In The Frontline

We have always known that doctors are heroes. This pandemic season – doctors have reinforced their role as the heroes.

Today, we highlight Dr Phyllis Ohene-Agyei, a former student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Ghana (KNUST).

Phyllis completed her medical training at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana. She completed a double masters’ degree in Public health with double distinctions from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, and Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sante Publique, France.

She is an old girl of Wesley Girls’ Senior High School.

She worked at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and KNUST hospital

She also served as the clinic manager and medical doctor-on-site for two multinational construction companies undertaking projects for the Government of Ghana.

Phyllis currently works with a non-governmental organization (Action against Hunger) in improving the nutritional and health status of women and children in Sierra Leone. 

With the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, she has been working as a health advisor providing technical support to ensure the continuity of primary health care services and supporting the roll-out of adapted protocols in the facilities.

She is also in charge of providing support to 22 primary healthcare facilities on triage of patients with Covid19-like symptoms according to national protocols.

She is an avid gender advocate and serves as the Gender Champion for her country office, and aims to spend her career bridging gender and health inequalities on the African continent.
