Ghanaian Basketball Star Bentil States Reason For Leaving College Early

Ghana forward, Ben Bentil has stated his reason for leaving Providence College after just two years, pointing to financial challenges.

He said this in a chat with the news outlet of his Alma matter Friars.com after completing the truncated 2019-2020 season in Greece where he plays for A1 Basketball League giants Panathinaikos. He joined the team after a stellar season with Peristeri GS.

Prior to that, Bentil played two seasons at Providence before declaring for the NBA Draft and becoming a professional. He was drafted 51st overall by Boston Celtics to become the first Ghana-born player to make it to the NBA.

However, Bentil confessed in the interview he didn’t want to leave Providence after two years and wanted to complete College.

“I know this is the first time I’m saying this publicly, but I personally wanted to stay in Friartown.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t keep playing for PC because my family back in Ghana wasn’t in the best condition. It was a matter of helping my mother make ends meet. She sacrificed everything for me.  To see her suffer like that, I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to help some way, somehow. That’s why I left school” he said.

The 6 foot 8 inch Forward Sekondi native averaged 21.1 points and 7.7 rebounds in his final year at Providence and has played in Spain, France and China in his professional career.
