One thing has been clear in the fight against coronavirus – early testing is key.

Even the government has attributed Ghana’s low death rate to the fact that they are testing people even before they show symptoms.

This means, early testing is key. However, with the current thorough molecular testing being used by scientists in the country, the turn around time for results is a bit slow.

This week, it was reported that the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research, just cleared a back log of samples yet to be tested.

This meant, there were positive samples and it took a longer period of time for those people to know their status.

This meant, those possible positive people could have passed on the virus while they were waiting for more than a day to know their results.

It makes, chasing and curbing the spread of the virus, much harder.

It is for this reason that Laud Anthony Basing’s rapid test kits is a life saver.

Laud’s company, Incas Diagnostic Services worked with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to develop a rapid test kit that would return a positive or negative coronavirus results in less than 20 minutes.

He is the founder and the CEO of Incas Diagnostic Services, a company which provides high-quality routine and specialized medical and industrial laboratory services in healthcare and agricultural environments.

The COVID-19 RDT is however still being optimized and they are working with the Food and Drugs Authority for the necessary regulatory framework.

Laud Anthony Basing has more than seven years worth of experience in laboratory testing, where he combines strong analytical skills with practical knowledge.

He is managing director of Incas Diagnostic Services Ltd, a company that provides high-quality routine and specialized medical and industrial laboratory services in healthcare and agricultural environments.

He is the American Society for Microbiology’s Young Ambassador to Ghana, an executive member of GABMLS, a board member of Guzakuza, a firm that seeks to grow women agripreneurs, the president of YALN-Ghana, and a member of the Alliance for Young Entrepreneurs-Ghana.

Laud is a 2016 Mandela Washington Fellow in the Business and Entrepreneurship track at the Purdue University

His dream is to expand his company into a biotech company with specialized areas of research and diagnostics in food safety, while impacting the lives of young people through an expanded mentorship program.

Laud’s achivement caught the eye of the US Embasy in Ghana. He has been working with the embassy through US government sponsored programmes for a number of years now.

After the US Embassy Ghana tweeted about Laud and his COVID-19 RDT, the United States’ Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also commended Laud for his amazing work.

When Laud is not in his lab working, then he is volunteering for the Upper West Akim District in building capacity for laboratory workers and organizes mentorship programs for several youth groups in Kumasi.

Laud is a modern day hero.
