It is known that the vagina cleans itself inside the body with natural vaginal secretions but sometimes due to some activities, food and improper hygiene, there are unusual changes which cause a change in discharge, infections and irritations. It is important to keep the vagina clean and the vulva (the area around the vagina) dry to keep it free from infections and irritations. Here are some tips you should consider.

Wear cotton undies and try to prevent wearing of thongs.

Unlike synthetic or nylon panties that trap heat and moisture providing organisms with a suitable environment to grow as well as thongs which allow easy access for bacteria to enter the urethra, cotton panties that cover the vagina and vulva are the most breathable and advisable undies to wear to ensure comfort to the vagina and prevent infections.

The vagina cleanses itself naturally hence avoid douching and over washing.

Instead, rinse your vagina as you would wash your face and don’t spend hours scrubbing it. Also, do no use anything that claims to detox or keeps it scented unless prescribed by a professional gynaecologist or doctor.

After sex?

Pee after sex if you are prone to UTI’s (Urinary Tract Infections) as urine washes out bacteria that may have gotten into the urethra and wipe the vagina properly or better still rinse with normal temperature water.

In your time of the month (period)?

Make sure to wear fresh underwear every day and change your sanitary protection frequently, whether pads or tampons. It is also advisable not to wear tight clothing to allow your vagina breath. Also, when wiping after using the toilet, make sure you wipe from front to back to avoid transferring harmful bacteria to your vagina.

Eat healthily.

There are some foods to eat to keep your vagina happy. The vagina has a pH of 3.8 to 4.5 which keeps it healthy and so when it goes out of balance it causes discomfort and infections. Here are some foods to take in to keep the pH balanced. Sweet potato, apple, plain yoghurt, soy etc. water also is necessary to keep the vagina healthy and prevent alcohol and sweets which encourages the growth of yeast in the vagina.

Exercise regularly.

Normal exercise such as walking and running can help maintain the good function of the vagina by toning up the pelvic floor and ensuring good general health.

Practice good hygiene.

Good hygiene is very important and needs to be practised by everyone including males. Make sure to wash and dry your undies in the sun and also iron if necessary to prevent bacteria from getting to the vagina. Also, wipe your vagina from front to back after visiting the washroom and take your bath at least ones a day.

Ladies, do not panic when there are discharges as it is normal and hormonal to have some amount of discharges. Healthy discharges do not have any strong smell or weird colour and although you may feel some uncomfortable wetness, you should not have any itching or soreness around your vagina or vulva.

If there is any change in your normal smell or there is itchy or sore, please see a gynaecologist ASAP.

Remember that vaginas are not gross! They are nice. Yes! Very nice.
