The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Owusu Afriyie Akoto has been trending on social media after he said a bunch of plantain was selling for GHS 5.
People started dragging the minister on social media.
Now, his team is doing damage control.
According to Manasseh Azure Awuni, an aide from the minister’s office reached out to him to explain why the minister said that.
In 2018, there was plantain glut. Someone sent the minister a video of a bunch of plantain he had bought on the Kumasi-Accra Highway for 5 cedis, Manasseh said the aide told him.
“The Minister has since been making reference to that price in his statements. It’s not new,” Manasseh said.
The mistake the minister made was that when he said the price this time, he did not state that it was in 2018, and not the current price.
“The minister is an agriculturalist and knows that plantain is a seasonal crop and will not be that cheap after Easter,” the aide reportedly said.
‘So the Minister was referring to a 2018 incident, but forgot to make reference to the year. That’s the explanation I’ve been given,” Mansseh wrote in a Facebook post.
Ok… Can y’all let it rest now?
