SUMMARY: Steve was born in Takoradi. His dad is from Akim Oda and he is partly Syrian. His mother is from Axim. He has two siblings, an older sister and a younger brother. He grew up mostly in Accra but his family did a bit of travelling around in Africa to countries such as Cote d’Ivoire, among others.
He attended Mizpa International School at Tesano then later completed his basic education at University Primary, Legon.
After he sat for his Basic Education Certificate Examination, Steve gained admission to Apam Senior High School where he studied General Science. However, in his third year at senior high school, Steve switched from General Science to Visual Arts.
After SHS, he briefly attended Ideal College but he quit later and gained admission at Radford University where he studied Fashion Design.
It was in his final year at Radford that Steve French made his grand entrance into the world of fashion. His final year show won the hearts of fashion lovers – this has now put Steve on the path of becoming one of the best fashion artists in the country.
Steve French is now part of the 2020 Gucci Fellowship Programme.
Steve has been featured on CNN Africa, Vogue Italia, Vogue Talent, Fashion Illustrated, Vlisco, among others.
He has styled both local and international politicians. Among these politicians are the dutch senator called Petra Stiene and President Akufo-Addo’s daughters. He has also styled a number of local and international celebrities including Naomi Campbell, Deborah Vanessa, Lydia Forson, Wanlov among others.
Steve was honoured as one of the emerging fashion talents by the Future Awards Africa Prize for Fashion and Design. He has been featured in the Guardian.
As someone who was a science student, his current successful fashion career was first made possible when he took the bold step of going against his teachers.
Changing his course of study was one of the most adventurous things he has ever done.
The class wasn’t really accepting of him even joining because they said he would top their class. With time, his classmates realised he just loved the course.
Steve’s 12 great grandmothers, whom he never met, are part of his foundation in fashion.
They were all seamstresses and the tradition of dressmaking was passed down from one generation to another.
The influence of his great grandmothers on his life came from stories he was told about them. These stories were told with pictures of the impressive work they’ve done and the trunks full of unused fabrics.
