The Ghana Universities Debate Championship (GUDC) is a replica of the World Universities Debate Championship (WUDC) on a national level and it comprises all registered universities under the umbrella of GUDC. It is an annual inter-university event which employs the British Parliamentary style of debate, unlike the conventional debate-style we are used to.
History has it that the maiden edition was hosted by the University of Ghana in 2015 and was a host and win event. Subsequently, the University of Cape Coast hosted it in 2016 and was won by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology(KNUST). In 2017, the University of Energy and Natural Resources hosted it in Sunyani in the Bono Region and was again won by KNUST
The University for Development Studies hosted the championship in 2018 which was again won by KNUST. Just last year, All Nations University College in Koforidua hosted it and was won by the University of Cape Coast. So far KNUST has the most number of trophies a total of three enviable trophies and UCC happens to be the defending champions.
This year’s GUDC has been dubbed Avagbedzi 2020 an Ewe word which translates Battlefield 2020 “It will be one hell of a debate battle as institutions all over the country try to earn the trophy and the bragging rights that comes with winning the whole competition. Every institution is poised to ensure that they win the most enviable inter-university debate trophy.” Said Mr Nathaniel ( UHAS Debate Society President )
Originally scheduled for this July, there might be a slight change in the date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
We at KUULPEEPSUHAS are very proud UHAS is hosting an event like this which will bring all students from the various universities in Ghana to campus UHAS. We wish Team UHAS the very best in their preparation and pray it becomes a host and win event.
