Wearing a mask is one of the protective measures you can take during this pandemic season.
According to WHO, as a healthy person you only need to wear a mask :
“ If you are taking care of a person with suspected COVID-19 infection or if you are coughing or sneezing,
The use of the mask goes hand in hand with the combination of frequent handwashing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based sanitizers.
Since the confirmation of the first case in Ghana, so many masks have been circulating in the country.
Tailors promoting their own and pharmaceutical companies advertising their products too and videos circulating on social media teaching people how to make one.
Which of all these masks actually protect against Covid-19?
1. Surgical mask
It hinders the wearer ( the infected person) from spreading the virus since the coronavirus can be spread through droplets which can be droplets of saliva or secretions from the upper respiratory tract when the wearer exhales.
2. Respirator Mask
It protects the wearer from dust, smoke, infectious agent like coronavirus. It is the most recommended one for non-infected persons. We have several types of respirator masks. The FFP1 which can filter at least 80% of airborne particles with 22% inward leakage, the FFP2 with 92% and FFP3 99%. You can also find the N95 that filter 95 % of airborne particles.
Protects you against dust and pollen. Not efficient in this corona case.
4. The Tissue Mask or African Print Mask
For some medical experts, this mask does not protect you from anything so it is useless. But some claim it is better than nothing.
One issue with the mask is that it becomes inefficient after 3-4 hours due to humidification or other reasons.
The second issue is that while wearing a mask, your eyes are exposed to the virus since the virus is airborne for a few seconds after someone sneezes or coughs.
The best thing to do is to stay home, go out only when it is necessary.
