How To Make A Reference List For Your Job Applications

Currently, plenty-paged CVs are out of date. You usually want to keep your CV under two pages. If you’re confident that you’ve been able to pack enough onto one page, then that’s the best way to go. Your reference should, therefore, not be attached to your CV in your initial application. Unless of course, the job listing asks for it.

You can write “References available on request at the end of your CV”. You can also leave that out altogether. If a company wants to reach out to your references, they will ask. Here are some pointers for making your reference list so that it is always available to send.

How Many References Is Appropriate

If you’re applying for an entry-level job, two to three references should be adequate. The number of references may also be specified in the reference request. In that case, don’t overthink it. Just go with what you’ve been asked for.

How To Choose Your References

When you’re choosing your references, you want to choose people that you have had good experiences with. Whether or not you got along with a person personally should not take priority. You should ask someone who you are certain recognized your good qualities.

If you’re going to put someone on your list of references, it is polite to let that person know. Aside from the fact that you don’t want a person to be ambushed, there is an advantage for you. When you tell someone to expect to be a reference, you give them a chance to prepare for being called.

You can have a list of references that extends beyond three. However, make sure that for any particular application, you choose the three that are the most appropriate for that particular job opening.
