In the lead-up to the opening kickoff of Super Bowl LIV, the final trailer for Mulan aired.
The live-action remake based on the 1998 Disney animated film tells the story of Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of Hua Zhou, who disguises herself as a man named Hua Jun in an effort to take the place of her sick father when the Emperor of China issues a decree that “one man per family” must serve in the Imperial Army.
The road to getting a live-action Mulan in theatres had a few hiccups that reportedly began as far back as a decade ago. The remake finally got off the ground when Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the screenwriters behind the Planet of the Apes reboot series, were attached to the project four years ago. The push to get Mulan off the ground came at a time when Disney has been repurposing its classic animated properties. Last year alone, Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King were released in theatres with Lady and the Tramp moving to its streaming service Disney+.
The Niki Caro-directed film, which is based on the “Ballad of Mulan” poem, will star Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Yoson An, Jason Scott Lee, Jet Li, and Gong Li.
Mulan will be in theatres on March 27.
