Marvel’s Eternals star Haaz Sleiman has revealed the first details about the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first gay superhero and confirmed he filmed an on-screen kiss for the movie.
“I just shot a Marvel film with the first openly gay superhero, The Eternals. I’m married to the gay superhero Phastos, played by Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry, and we represent a gay family and have a child,” Sleiman told NewNowNext.
When asked if the film involved a gay kiss, he added, “Oh, yeah, absolutely, and it’s a beautiful, very moving kiss. Everyone cried on set. For me, it’s very important to show how loving and beautiful a queer family can be. Brian Tyree Henry is such a tremendous actor and brought so much beauty into this part, and at one point I saw a child in his eyes, and I think it’s important for the world to be reminded that we in the queer community were all children at one point. We forget that because we’re always depicted as sexual or rebellious. We forget to connect on that human part.”
Last July, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed Eternals would feature the MCU’s first gay superhero but didn’t reveal any clues as to who that would be. Then, in August, he revealed this character would be a married man with a family, once again without revealing the character’s identity. Now, thanks to Sleiman, we know that Brian Tyree Henry will play this character.
Directed by Chloé Zhao with a screenplay by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, The Eternals stars Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Gemma Chan as Sersi and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, aka the Black Knight.
The film arrives in theatres on November 6, 2020.
