It’s the birthday of award-winning Dutch-Ghanaian skeleton athlete Akwasi Frimpong. He turns 34 today!
Akwasi Frimpong also known as the GoldenSprint has represented Ghana in major, local and international sporting events and has won many medals which include 8 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals.

1. He was born in Ghana
Akwasi Frimpong was born on February 11, 1986, in Kumasi, Ghana. When he turned 8, his family took a life-changing decision and moved to the Netherlands. It took 13 years for him and his family to earn a Dutch residency. He became a Dutch citizen in the year 2008.
2. He first became interested in sprinting when he was 15
His love for sprinting began at the age of 15. He was inspired by a friend who won a medal in a racing competition. This was a major turning point for him. Ex-Olympian Sammy Monsels helped him excel in running. His hard work paid off and he went on to win sports events.
3. The Rabbit Theory is based on his life
Created by Dutch filmmakers, Rinske Bosch and Nicole Batteke, The Rabbit Theory revolves around Frimpong’s life in the Netherlands. The documentary’s filming commenced in 2003
4. He is a philanthropist
Growing up in unfavourable circumstances never deterred Akwasi Frimpong from helping others. The acclaimed sprinter spent eight years of his childhood in a one-room house with his grandmother and nine other children.
He soon realized that the best talent in underdeveloped nations remains unexplored due to socioeconomic inequalities and lack of access to basic necessities.
Hence, today he is deeply committed to giving back to his native country. He is the founder of the first Ghanaian Bobsled and Skeleton Federation. The organisation assists members to participate in international sports events by offering them complete support and guidance.
Coupled with Ghana, Frimpong has been actively engaging with young talents in his adopted country, the Netherlands.
He is also involved in several youth-oriented projects in the USA, including the GoldenSprint Challenge Invitational. The program strives to inspire the youth to participate in sports.
5. He’s an entrepreneur and motivational speaker
Many of us know Akwasi Frimpong as a skeleton athlete. However, he isn’t just an athlete but is an entrepreneur and motivational speaker.
Frimpong has exceptional skills in motivational speaking. Having a natural flair for public speaking, he ignites passion and entrepreneurial spirit in people from diverse backgrounds.
