Chelsea legend/former assistant manager, Gianfranco Zola has opened up on the drama that broke out during Chelsea’s 2019 League Cup final defeat to Manchester City.
Then Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri wanted to substitute Kepa but the Spaniard refused, which created an infamous drama at Wembley Stadium.
Zola, who was Sarri’s assistant at that time explained what actually happened.
“There was a lot of confusion. We were in the final minutes of the game, and he tried to waste time. Then he threw himself to the ground,” said Zola to Goal.
“We wanted to make the change. He was injured and we were approaching penalties.
“On the bench was Willy Caballero, who is very good in those situations, and knew all the Manchester City players of his time there.
“He did not understand, there was a great misunderstanding. We were also pressured because we wasted time.
“What he did was not good, but he apologised and did not go any further. They are things that can happen,” Zola explained.
