Fargo is returning for its long-awaited fourth installment. More than two years after season three 3 aired, FX lifted the curtain on the first trailer for season 4, led by Chris Rock.
The 54-year-old actor/comedian takes on the role of Loy Cannon, a crime boss who finds himself in a power struggle in 1950s Kansas City, Missouri. However, series creator Noah Hawley insists he didn’t set out to make a period piece.
“I don’t really consider 1979 a period piece because I was alive in 1979,” he said during the TCA panel, as reported by GoldDerby, “but 1950 … I had the sense that if i made something set in the ’50s, I had to make something that felt like the ’50s, but I also wanted to try to make something that felt modern.
So that was exciting — to realize, no, I can do modern stories set in a period.” Judging by the new trailer, it seems Hawley accomplished that goal.
Season 4 will focus on the war between two syndicates that are attempting to achieve the American dream.
Rock’s character leads an African-American crime family that clashes with an Italian-American crime family that has dominated the city’s shadow economy. “Italians, they’re the past. We’re the future,” Rock’s Cannon says in the clip.
“They just don’t know it yet.” You can watch the new trailer above. Fargo season 4 also stars Jason Schwartzman, Ben Whishaw, Jessie Buckley, Timothy Olyphant, Glynn Turman, and Uzo Aduba. The Emmy-winning anthology series will return to the small screen April 19 with two back-to-back episodes.
