More details are emerging about the upcoming TV adaptation of one of Nigerian author Chimanda Ngozi Adichie’s best-loved novels, Americanah.
Filmmaker Chinonye Chukwu is set to direct the first two episodes of the series on HBO Max, OkayAfrica reports.
Earlier this week Corey Hawkins was announced in the role of Blaine, the main character’s boyfriend who is a Yale professor, the news site adds.
The series is based on Chimamanda Adichie’s seminal novel by the same name. Here’s a full description of Americanah via Deadline:
Americanah tells the epic story of Ifemelu (Nyong’o), a self-assured woman raised in Nigeria, who as a teenager falls in love with her classmate Obinze (Momoh). Living in a military-ruled country, they each depart for the West, with Ifemelu heading for America, where, despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple for the first time with what it means to be black. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous undocumented life in London.
Other famous names on board include Kenyan Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o as lead character Ifemelu, and her Black Panther co-star Danai Gurira who wrote the pilot episode.
