SUMMARY: Mohammed Osumanu is a 29-year-old young man who loves everything about the African style and fashion. He manages to manipulate it however he likes to fit current trends and make a statement out of it. He had been struggling on his own for 4 years, trying to keep his head above water in this industry which does not really help financially until he started going commercial with his stuff.
This is because, in the beginning, Ghanaians did not really understand the type of style he was portraying. Yes, it was intriguing to see him dressed up a certain way at events but would they pay him for an art installation? No. But now, people are copying his style while claiming to be “woke”.
One of the major highlights of his years doing this was when BET sent him a DM on Instagram asking him to submit some of his works in order to be featured on their platform which they did.
Mohammed was born in Afienya and is the 6th born out of 7 children from his parents.
His Primary school education was at Afienya D/A Basic School and after, went to Ashaiman Senior High School to study Visual Art. He went to IPMC to further his studies in Graphic Designing after SHS but due to financial constraints, he had to drop out after a few months.
He started selling African inspired T-shirts to survive since that was the only source of income he had and in as much as he didn’t make much out of it, he kept pushing himself to be better because of the passion he has for everything that is Art. He sold some of the T-shirts on Social Media and Google Trader.
He knew his talents as early as when he was in Primary School when he used to print his friends’ names behind shirts as their Football Jerseys.
PERSONAL LIFE: He’s very single.
ART SOUL (What fuels their art): What fuels his Art is the fact that he wants people to know more about Africa and to teach African History through Fashion. For example, his streetwear brand usually has some information about some of our African ancestors we do not exactly know about but are influential in what Africa is today.
He stays motivated to read more about Africa and its culture because a lot of Africans and African Americans, do not know their roots. We know some of the popular heroes like Kwame Nkrumah but there are still others that did not make it into the Textbooks and Storybooks we’ve read but their names need to be known as well.
INFLUENCES: Virgil Abloh and Pharrell Williams influence his streetwear style.
FASHION STYLE: He’s known for his combination of Afrocentric and street style.
PUBLIC IMAGE: In the beginning, Ghanaians didn’t really understand his style and didn’t take him seriously. They saw him as a joker and some even used to think that he wasn’t normal but now, people are more accepting so much so that they are copying him.
CONTROVERSIES: Fela Kuti’s family wanted to file a lawsuit against him for making Fela T-shirts and jackets. They wanted him to ask permission from them before doing anything like that.
OTHER BUSINESSES AND VENTURES: He wants to go into farming soon.
