After years of existing in a void of film purgatory, 20th Century Fox’s X-Men spinoff The New Mutants is finally gearing up to be released.
The newest trailer of the movie shows off some of the changes director Josh Boone has made. The film has existed in a purgatory of reshoots and delays both before and after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, along with fears that Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige — who now is in charge of X-Men movies after the deal — would shelve the movie.
The film is described as “an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring.” Together they’ll try to figure out what’s happening as “strange occurrences begin to take place,” and they try to make it out alive. Unlike other X-Men movies, The New Mutants leans more toward horror than a traditional superhero flick.
The road to The New Mutants has been rocky at best. Fox first made plans to develop the movie in 2015, and production started in 2016. Filming originally ended in September 2017, but things only went downhill. In January 2018, Fox moved the release date back to February 2019, which allowed Deadpool 2 to run without contestation from another Marvel movie at Fox. A couple of months later, The New Mutants was delayed again to ensure that Dark Phoenix, another X-Men movie, wouldn’t have any competition.
Cast member changes, script rewrites, extensive reshoots, and the aforementioned Disney acquisition moved everything back throughout the years. Now, close to five years after the deal to make the movie was signed, The New Mutants is finally coming out.
The New Mutants will be released on April 2nd, 2020 (if it comes out at all).
