America Could Be Facing a French Fry Shortage Soon

French fries are on the menu of almost every eatery in the USA

Thanks to awfully cold and wet weather in the United States and Canada, potato crops had difficulty growing, according to Bloomberg. Potato processors are doing their best to make sure we can enjoy fries despite the cool weather conditions affecting our major suppliers.

“French fry demand has just been outstanding lately, and so, supplies can’t meet the demand,” Idaho Potato Commission’s Travis Blacker told the news outlet.

According to a report from the United Potato Growers of Canada, the potato crop this year took a significant blow. It is considered to have taken a hit of about three billion pounds than last year, a massive loss. Oregon experienced a production fall of about 16 per cent, while North Dakota saw an 11.8 per cent fall. A few states, Michigan, Maine and Wisconsin, experienced production increases, however.

“It’s a manageable situation,” Kevin MacIsaac of the United Potato Growers of Canada told Bloomberg. “Potatoes are going to have to move from one channel to another that they sometimes don’t move in a normal year.”
