Losing on penalties has become a habit for Ghana’s national teams. The Black Meteors lost on penalties for the second time in the space of three days.
Coach Ibrahim Tanko and his team could not grab the final ticket for the 2020 Olympic games as they lost 6-5 on penalties to South Africa in the 3rd/4th place playoff of the U-23 AFCON tournament in Egypt.
The match ended 2-2 after 90 minutes and penalties were needed to find a winner.
In the penalty shootout, Emmanuel Lomotey, Evans Mensah, Issah Abbas, Samuel Obeng, and Zakaria Fuseinu scored for Ghana but Kingsley Fobi, Emmanuel Sarpong and Emmanuel Cudjoe failed at the penalty spot.
This, however, means that Egypt, Ivory Coast and South Africa will represent the African continent at the 2020 Olympics.
After the game, Ghanaians took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the game. Here are some reactions:
Honestly speaking, the squad were rotten tomatoes 🍅. Only 4 of these players to me deserve any sort of a call up into our senior soccer team in the future.
The rest all for go play women’s league. They are not footballers #BlackMeteors

I just can’t believe this!!!!!!
Ghana and penalties why???
Where is the penalty God? I want to personally go and do sacrifices on Ghana’s behalf. Can’t hold this agony anymore. It’s tormenting me. #AFCONU23 #BringBackTheLove #BlackMeteors

Penalty taking should be a compulsory subject from Creche to University. These are some of the things government should be looking at… It’s becoming a national canker… #BlackMeteors #BringBackTheLove #YearOfReturn

I think penalty taking should be thought from the grassroot level. It is pandemic eating our football that is from the U-17 to the senior level. Kurt and his Exco has a big task ahead of them. #BringBackTheLove #CAFU23 #BlackMeteors

#BringBackTheLove #BringBackTheLove and Ghana keep on disappointing us when it reaches penalty shoot out. @ghanafaofficial better find a way solving it if it is a curse cos they can’t be breaking our hearts whilst we support wholeheartedly #BlackMeteors #YearOfReturn

Be like that under 20 penalty shoot out was a fluke cis there is literally no way a national team can be so bad at penalty shoot outs. Is it a curse or what? #BlackMeteors

We leave y’all with this tweet:
It’s Asamoah Gyan’s birthday today.
The Sarpong guy is wearing Gyan’s No.3 jersey and you expected him to score? 😂😂😂
He’s broken your heart in memory of Gyan. That’s why he’s there 😂😂😂💔#BlackMeteors
