James Gunn Says Upcoming ‘Suicide Squad’ Movie Has ‘Reinvigorated My Creative Life’

Amid a series of answered fan inquiries on Instagram over the weekend, filmmaker James Gunn let loose some insight on a personal creative reinvigoration that’s taking place while putting together the upcoming The Suicide Squad.

Asked if being a director feels “more like a job” now due to money matters and whatnot, Gunn confirmed the opposite is true.

“It definitely feels like a calling and passion more than a job—now more than ever,” he said in a Story update. “There would be much easier ways to just make money. And The Suicide Squad has reinvigorated my creative life like nothing before it. I’m grateful every day I step on set (although less grateful at those sunrise set calls!)”

Elsewhere, Gunn was asked about the possibility of the 2021 film joining the rare group of blockbusters to surpass the billion-dollar mark at the box office. For Gunn, quality is most important, meaning he doesn’t give much thought to arbitrary financial success markers. Gunn said his “only focus is on making a great movie.”

Gunn also said that Taika Waititi has finished filming his scenes for the film, while Margot Robbie has shot “some [but] not nearly all” of her scenes. The answered questions marathon on Gunn’s IG Story also included thoughts on his favourite Stanley Kubrick film, his love for the city of Atlanta, and more. Check all the answers out here while they’re still alive.
